Philippine College Tennis

Sep 16th, 2008 | By jong | Category: blog

Five years ago when I entered college and up to now I haven’t really heard or watch a college game of tennis. I’ve seen some of them played with players of Kobe-Gokuen University last 2007. But In NCAA or UAAP, i still haven’t.

I can’t understand why most Filipinos have this mindset that basketball is the game we should play. Look at NCAA’s website, tennis is nowhere to be found only basketball. It’s as if basketball is the only game that is being played by colleges. When I searched for UAAP, UBELT.com ranks first on google. There is actually NCAA and UAAP sports section there but the link is dead and most of its information is for collegiate basketball.

How can we promote tennis in this country when most organizations aren’t doing what they are supposed to do. Well ,this is not just tennis in general, this is about Philippine sports. We keep on ranting why until now we haven’t bagged yet an olympic gold but have we ever asked ourselves if we did our very best? How can the athletes improve in their disciplines when all we can see is what, basketball?

Ok fine, I’m not against basketball but the fact that basketball isn’t  just so suitable for us filipinos. I guess it’s about time that we embrace and try different sports. Different organizations should support not just basketball but every sport in the country.

Look what happened with our olympians last Beijing Olympics, I guess it’s about time that the government do something about it like any other country is doing. Assign someone who is more capable of doing the job and not just anyone who would just sit there and spend the allotted budget for our sports sector for their own sake.

  1. I couldn’t have said it better! :)

  2. I don’t mean to be rude, but ……

Its strange that you complain about the lack of attention to college tennis, and yet you yourself haven’t taken the time to watch it. I felt the same thing two years ago. But instead of ranting on the internet, I made a personal commitment to get off my fat ass and make time to attend as many of my schools’ (in UAAP) matches as I possibly could, even if it conflicted with my own playing days. I also posted the schedules and some results as they happened here on this very board. But I have yet to read from anyone else in this board that actually watched. Sure, government and/or private sector support can do a lot, but without the warm bodies like yours to watch, cheer, and support the players, they might as well stay home and play tennis on their PS2’s and Wii’s.

FYI, UAAP (and I think also NCAA) tennis usually starts in mid-January and runs until early late February. I think the 2009 edition will be held in Rizal Memorial again. So be there. I’m sure I’ll be.

  3. makinao,

    thanks sa comment.

I am really not complaining, I am just saying what I feel about college tennis.

    Cheers!

Mabuhay ang college tennis at Philippine Tennis

  4. the problem with college tennis in the philippines is that the schools don’t try to work together to make it year round. here in the US. the regular season starts in the spring, but schools have scheduled invitationals in the fall and winter going into the regular college season. no college tennis in the summer because everyone is playing tournaments all over the place. i’ve watched a few of them personally and from first hand experience, they are fun to watch. and if you really care about tennis as a whole. do something about it.
